“The mind is like an intricate machine”
These furniture designs, despite their machine-like construction, possess a tangible, vital quality. They project constructive principles as a basis of design. There is a contradiction between the softness of line and the brutality of metal. this complexity creates an urge to touch. Both intellect and emotion give the designs their power.
Conceptually, designing and building furniture has many similarities to designing and building a structure. Architecture can be seen to be an enclosed system of volumes, furniture to be an open system of volumes. Ideally, all parts look like the functions which they perform, and connect the whole through a meaningful and consistent system of relationships. a systematic approach to design requires that the thought process remains the same, whether one is designing the frame of a chair or the structure of a building.
